Job Description: Lead Quantitative Analyst

Role Description

As a Lead Quantitative Analyst, you will lead a small team of Quantitative Analysts to design and build quantitative tools to support our firm’s trading operations.

You and your team will be given responsibility over quantitative systems such as forecasting models, optimization engines, and risk management methodologies. You will lead your team to build quantitative systems that are production ready for use in day-to-day trading operations. All systems must be well-tested and able to deal with large amounts of real-time data. You will oversee quality assurance and troubleshooting of the systems produced by your team.

You will also lead your team in designing and building performance evaluation frameworks for your quantitative systems and their related trading strategies. You will work with the trading team to suggest enhancements to opportunity identification, bid optimization, risk mitigation and runtime performance. You will work with senior management to prioritize projects for your team, and will direct your team to deliver projects in a timely manner.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the trading team, you and your team will hypothesize new trading strategies that may be profitable, investigate them by creating back tests and other evaluative tools, clearly communicate your findings, and provide recommendations for next steps or other things to investigate.

You will also play a leading role in assessing future hires for your team and in continuously improving the performance of your team and individual team members.

You will be expected to communicate your team’s efforts clearly and concisely to other Tios Capital teams. You must be able to work in a dynamic, collaborative environment. It is important that you are enthusiastic about joining an early-stage company. You will need to be flexible, driven, collaborative, and comfortable maintaining responsibilities in multiple disciplines simultaneously.

This position is based in our Alexandria, VA office. You will be expected to travel to our Birmingham, AL office periodically (estimated 2-4 weeks of travel annually).

Responsibilities

  • Work with various teams to design and architect tools for our Tech and Quant team to build, in order to expand the functionality of our trading platform. Suggest features and workflows based on your quantitative expertise.
  • Lead your quantitative team in designing and building quantitative systems that are ready for daily trading use. Serve as the leading voice for quantitative design decisions. Direct efforts such as performance tuning, parallelization, and error handling in a production setting.
  • Contribute to building production code in various projects -- as a leader of a small team, you will be expected to also contribute as a senior-level quantitative analyst.
  • Oversee a small team of 1-5 quantitative analysts. Provide regular coaching for team members for continuous improvement. Lead regular team retrospectives to continually improve team efforts.
  • Direct the weekly and daily project work of your quantitative team, serving as a Scrum master within agile development processes. Oversee coding efforts, quality assurance, production releases, troubleshooting, and monitoring of your team’s quantitative systems.
  • Direct efforts to monitor the performance of your team’s quantitative systems. Provide studies monitoring: trader use of your systems, returns performance, risk evaluation, and opportunities for improvement. Regularly communicate findings to other teams and suggest enhancements.
  • Direct R&D efforts to test new areas of development – including trading strategies, forecasting tools, optimization, and risk management tools. Regularly analyze data sets for opportunities to improve overall company performance.
  • Direct communication efforts between your team and Trading and Technology teams. Communicate findings from R&D efforts, provide demos of quantitative tools, and gather feedback from our internal stakeholders.
  • Provide training to traders and other team members to understand quantitative methodologies and to effectively use quantitative tools.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent quantitative problem solving skills required.
  • An excellent foundation of quantitative theory coupled with an ability to build real-world models and analytical tools.
  • Driven, organized, and able to work on independent research and real-world problem solving with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Minimum of 3 years of R programming, with at least 2 years of using R to build tools for use in a commercial production setting.
  • Experience creating and maintaining R packages for private or open source use. Includes experience with automated testing tools such as Testthat.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with model building using various tools and approaches, with a demonstrated rigor to variable study, model construction, and validation processes. A deep understanding of a wide variety of modeling algorithms is required in areas such as regressions, machine learning, stochastic systems, and time series modeling.
  • At least 2 years of experience with optimization engines (linear and non-linear) required
  • At least 2 years of experience with running large-scale data analytics using parallelization techniques (multicore, multi-server clusters). E.g. Spark, Hadoop, and related technologies.
  • At least 1 year experience as a senior quantitative analyst dealing with large amounts of realtime data and building complex quantitative systems.
  • At least 2 years experience with SQL required. At least 1 year experience with other data stores (e.g. Redis, DynamoDb, Cassandra) required.
  • At least 2 years experience with collaborative software development required, using distributed source code management systems, e.g. Git.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with Scrum or other agile project management methodologies. A clear track record of leading quantitative projects to successful and timely completion is required.
  • Experience with quantitative trading preferred.
  • Experience with wholesale electricity markets preferred.
  • BS in Mathematics or quantitative field required.
  • MS in a quantitative field required.
  • Eagerness and ability to learn new technologies and programming languages quickly.
  • Good communication skills to explain and justify your conclusions to non-technical stakeholders.

Compensation

Tios Capital will provide a competitive base salary, with eligibility for bonuses based on individual and company performance. Three weeks of paid vacation, health, and dental insurance are also included.
